PTE Summarize Spoken Text — tips, template & practice

    Updated 29 May 2026 · 5 min read

PTE Summarize Spoken Text plays a 60–90 second audio lecture and gives you 10 minutes to write a 50–70 word summary. It feeds into both Listening and Writing section scores — making it one of the highest-leverage tasks in the test.

    How it's scored

    • Content (max 2): covers main points from the audio.
    • Form (max 1): 50–70 words. Outside = zero.
    • Grammar (max 2) + Vocabulary (max 2) + Spelling (max 2).

Like SWT, Form is the killer rule. Always count words before submitting.

    The template that works

    Template (~60 words):

`The lecturer discussed [main topic], explaining that [key point 1]. They further noted that [key point 2], and pointed out [key point 3]. In conclusion, [one-sentence wrap-up].`

During the 60–90s audio: write keywords only — aim for 6–8 nouns and verbs. Don't try full sentences.

    Top tips for higher scores

    • Use the template literally — only swap in keywords.
    • Aim for 55–65 words. Under 50 or over 70 = zero on Form.
    • Use 'the lecturer / the speaker' — never first person.
    • Capture the conclusion of the lecture if you hear an 'overall…' or 'in summary…' signal.
    • Type fast, spell-check last 2 minutes.

    Common mistakes to avoid

    • Going over 70 words — zeros Form.
    • Including personal opinion.
    • Missing the main idea (usually stated in the first 15 seconds of audio).
    • Spelling errors on academic vocabulary.
