PTE Repeat Sentence — practice & strategy
Updated 29 May 2026 · 5 min read
Repeat Sentence is the single hardest PTE Speaking task to score 79+ on. You hear a 3–9 second sentence once, get nothing on screen, and have to repeat it exactly into the microphone. There are 10–12 of them in the test and they contribute to both your Speaking AND Listening scores — making this one task worth ~25% of your PTE composite if you're aiming for Superior English.
This page gives you the AI-graded practice drills, the official scoring rubric, and the 5 techniques that consistently move candidates from 65 to 79 on Repeat Sentence.
How Repeat Sentence is scored
Three sub-scores, equally weighted:
Content (0–3): Did you repeat the words correctly? 3 = all content words present; 2 = at least 50% of content words; 1 = at least one content word; 0 = nothing recognizable.
Oral Fluency (0–5): Was your delivery smooth, with natural pace, phrasing, and stress? Hesitations, false starts, and unnatural pauses lower this.
Pronunciation (0–5): Were all phonemes intelligible? Heavy mispronunciation lowers this even if content is correct.
Maximum 13 raw points per task. Hitting Speaking 79 typically requires averaging ≥10/13 across 10–12 Repeat Sentence items.
The 5 techniques that move scores from 65 to 79
1. Chunk and shadow. Don't try to memorize word-by-word. Break the sentence into 2–3 chunks of meaning as you hear it. Repeat those chunks, not individual words.
2. Start speaking within 1 second of the beep. Hesitation kills Oral Fluency. If you're not sure, start anyway with the first chunk you remember.
3. Use natural sentence stress. Don't repeat in a monotone. The AI rewards natural intonation. Stress the verb and the object noun.
4. Don't restart. If you make a mistake mid-sentence, keep going. Restarting destroys Oral Fluency. A flawed continuous delivery scores higher than a perfect restart.
5. Drill 20 per day for 3 weeks. Repeat Sentence is pure pattern recognition + working memory. There's no shortcut — you build the skill by reps.
Common mistakes that cap your score at 65
Pausing for >1 second after the beep. Saying 'umm' or 'uh'. Restarting after a mistake. Repeating in a flat monotone (the AI flags this as 'low oral fluency'). Trying to remember the exact words instead of the meaning. Speaking too fast (which causes mispronunciation) or too slow (which the AI flags as unnatural pace).
Step-by-step plan
- 1
Listen for meaning, not words
Break the sentence into 2–3 chunks as you hear it.
- 2
Start within 1 second
Begin speaking immediately after the beep — hesitation kills Fluency.
- 3
Use natural stress
Stress verbs and object nouns; don't speak in a monotone.
- 4
Never restart
If you make a mistake, keep going — restarts destroy Oral Fluency.
- 5
Drill 20 per day
Pure rep-based skill. 3 weeks of daily 20-reps moves most candidates from 65 to 79.
