PTE Read Aloud — 7 tips to score 79+
Updated 29 May 2026 · 5 min read
Read Aloud is the easiest Speaking task to score 79+ on — *if* you know the pace and pause rules. You see a 50–70 word passage on screen, get 35–40 seconds to prepare, then read it into the microphone. 6–7 of these appear per test, and they're the first speaking tasks you'll do.
This guide gives you the 7 techniques that consistently move Read Aloud scores from 65 to 79.
The 7 techniques
1. Hit 140–160 words per minute. Slower triggers 'unnatural pace'. Faster causes mispronunciation. Use a metronome app during practice.
2. Pause at punctuation only. A 0.3-second pause at commas, 0.6 seconds at periods. Don't add extra pauses 'for emphasis' — the AI flags them as hesitations.
3. Stress content words, swallow function words. Stress nouns, verbs, adjectives. De-stress articles, prepositions, auxiliaries. This produces natural English rhythm.
4. Read through punctuation, not around it. Don't pause at line breaks. The AI uses commas/periods to track natural phrasing.
5. Start strong, finish strong. First 3 words and last 3 words have outsized impact on Pronunciation scoring. Hit them clearly.
6. Use the prep time to scan, not memorize. Identify long words, proper nouns, and tricky pronunciation in your 35 seconds. Don't try to memorize the whole passage.
7. Don't restart for one bad word. Skip and continue. Restarts cost more Oral Fluency points than a single mispronunciation costs Pronunciation points.
