When did IRCC start accepting PTE for Express Entry?

January 2024. PTE Core (not PTE Academic) is accepted for Express Entry programs including FSW, CEC, and FST.

Is PTE Core easier than IELTS General for Canadian PR?

For most non-native English speakers, yes — PTE's AI scoring is more accent-tolerant and you get results in 2 days vs 13. But CLB conversion thresholds are stricter on Listening and Speaking, so you need higher raw scores.

What's the minimum PTE Core score for Express Entry?

CLB 7 is the minimum for FSW/CEC — that's PTE Core 60/60/60/68 (Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking). Most successful candidates target CLB 9 to maximize CRS points.

Can I use PTE Academic instead of PTE Core for PR?

No. IRCC only accepts PTE Core for Express Entry. PTE Academic is for university admissions and other visa types. Make absolutely sure you book PTE Core.

PTE Core to CLB conversion table

Official IRCC conversion (rounded down to nearest CLB):

CLB 10: Reading 88+, Writing 90, Listening 89+, Speaking 89+ CLB 9: Reading 78–87, Writing 79–89, Listening 82–88, Speaking 84–88 CLB 8: Reading 69–77, Writing 69–78, Listening 71–81, Speaking 76–83 CLB 7: Reading 60–68, Writing 60–68, Listening 60–70, Speaking 68–75 CLB 6: Reading 51–59, Writing 51–59, Listening 50–59, Speaking 59–67 CLB 5: Reading 42–50, Writing 41–50, Listening 39–49, Speaking 51–58 CLB 4: Reading 33–41, Writing 32–40, Listening 28–38, Speaking 42–50

Target scores for max CRS points

CLB 9 is the sweet spot. It gives you full 6 points per skill (24 total) under the language factor, plus skill-transferability bonus points if combined with education or work experience.

To hit CLB 9 on PTE Core, target: Reading 78, Writing 79, Listening 82, Speaking 84. Listening and Speaking thresholds are higher than Reading and Writing — plan your prep accordingly.

Going above CLB 9 (i.e. CLB 10): Adds another 1 point per skill (4 total). Usually not worth the extra study time unless you're already comfortably at CLB 9.

PTE Core vs IELTS General vs CELPIP for IRCC

PTE Core advantages: Fastest results (2 days), most test centres globally, AI scoring more lenient on non-native accents.

IELTS General advantages: Most familiar (32M test takers/year), human speaking examiner, accepted everywhere.

CELPIP-General advantages: Designed for Canadian English, scoring maps 1:1 with CLB (no conversion needed), strong availability in Canada.

If you're outside Canada and have a non-Canadian accent, PTE Core usually scores highest. If you're already in Canada and consume Canadian media, CELPIP scores highest. If you want maximum certainty in acceptance across all PR streams, IELTS General is the safest historical default.

Common PTE Core mistakes for PR applicants

Booking PTE Academic by accident. PTE Academic is NOT accepted for Express Entry — only PTE Core. Read the booking page carefully.

Underestimating Listening. PTE Core Listening uses Canadian and North American accents — different from PTE Academic's mixed accents. Practice with Canadian English audio specifically.

Skipping Writing practice. Writing 79 (CLB 9) requires precise structure, not just grammar. Use templates and stick to them.
