IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic — tips, template & practice
Updated 29 May 2026 · 5 min read
IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 gives you 20 minutes to describe a chart, graph, map, or process in 150+ words. It's mechanically templatable — once you have the structure for each visual type, every task becomes a fill-in-the-blanks exercise.
Task 1 is worth one-third of your Writing band. Most candidates over-invest in Task 2 and under-prepare Task 1 — the easy 6.5 lift sits here.
How it's scored
- Task Achievement: covers main features + overview. 150+ words.
- Coherence & Cohesion: linking words, paragraphing.
- Lexical Resource: data-description vocabulary.
- Grammar: passive voice (especially for processes), comparatives.
The 'overview' paragraph is non-negotiable for band 7+ — most candidates forget it.
The template that works
4-paragraph template (~170 words):
Para 1 — Intro (30 words): Paraphrase the prompt. *"The [chart/graph/map] illustrates [topic] over [time period] in [location]."*
Para 2 — Overview (40 words): Two general observations. CRITICAL for band 7+. *"Overall, it is clear that [biggest trend]. Additionally, [second-biggest observation]."*
Para 3 — Detail 1 (50 words): Group similar data + 2 specific numbers.
Para 4 — Detail 2 (50 words): Group the rest + 2 specific numbers.
Top tips for higher scores
- Always include an overview paragraph. No overview = band 5 ceiling.
- Use a mix of comparatives: 'twice as many', 'a third of', 'significantly higher than'.
- For trends: 'rose sharply', 'plateaued', 'fluctuated', 'experienced a dramatic decline'.
- Use passive voice for process diagrams: 'The water is heated…', 'The mixture is poured…'.
- Aim for 170–180 words. Under 150 = automatic penalty.
- Spend exactly 20 minutes. Task 2 is worth more — don't overrun.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting the overview — single biggest band-7+ blocker.
- Including personal opinion ('I think the chart shows…') — Task Achievement penalty.
- Quoting every number — looks unstructured. Pick 4–5 maximum.
- Under 150 words — automatic 0.5 band penalty.
- Spending 30 minutes on Task 1 and rushing Task 2 — Task 2 is worth double.
