IELTS Listening Section 3 — tips, template & practice
Updated 29 May 2026 · 5 min read
IELTS Listening Section 3 is the academic discussion section — typically 2–4 speakers (students + tutor) discussing a research project, course, or assignment. It's the section most candidates lose points on because the conversation jumps between speakers and contains opinion-changes, agreements, and disagreements.
How it's scored
- Per-question scoring: 1 point each, 40 questions total across 4 sections.
- Section 3 has 10 questions, usually a mix of multiple choice and matching.
- Spelling counts for short-answer questions.
- Plural/singular matters ('book' vs 'books').
Band 7 = 30/40 correct. Band 8 = 35/40. Band 9 = 39/40.
The template that works
The pre-listening 30-second drill:
1. Skim all 10 questions in the prep window. 2. Underline keywords in each question (names, topics, action verbs). 3. Predict the answer type — number? word? name? 4. For multiple choice: read all options before the audio starts.
During the audio:
- Follow the question order — answers come in sequence.
- If you miss one, MOVE ON immediately. Hesitation = miss the next one too.
- Watch for opinion-change signals: 'actually', 'on second thought', 'but I've reconsidered'.
- Distractor traps: an answer mentioned and then corrected. The CORRECTION is the right answer.
Top tips for higher scores
- If two people disagree, the FINAL agreement is usually the answer.
- Distractor traps: ignore the first thing mentioned if it's then corrected.
- Synonyms in questions vs audio: 'students' = 'undergraduates', 'project' = 'assignment'.
- Always write something — never leave blank. Guess if needed.
- Use the 10-minute transfer time to check spelling and plurals.
- Section 3 is 50% multiple choice — read all options before the audio.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing the first answer mentioned without waiting for the speaker to correct or refine.
- Spelling errors ('accommodation', 'environment', 'questionnaire').
- Missing plural -s on countable nouns.
- Panicking on a missed question and missing the next 2 as well.
- Not predicting answer types during the prep window.
